Celebrity Deformities

I've seen this around a few places recently and thought it was interesting that most of us have probably not even noticed the conditions of the following celebrities. Some of them developed as a result of injuries or acquired them in a fight as the case is with David Bowie's eye. Some of these were conditions that existed when they were born. Some of them are questionable deformities, like Mickey Rourke's fingers ("gnarly") but since he's a total human deformity it works here.

Denzel Washington

Washington broke the pinky finger of his right hand during a childhood basketball accident and never had it set correctly. The finger is still crooked to this day, bent at the bottom knuckle a full 45 degrees outward from his other fingers.

Dan Ackroyd, webbed toes

Webbed toes is the common name for syndactyly affecting the feet. It is characterized by the fusion of two or more toes. In humans it occurs in approximately one in 2,000 to 2,500 live births. There is no known cause. It can affect the toes in varying degrees. Ashton Kutcher has this in a less severe form. This condition is also known as tiger toes or twin toes.

 Elizabeth Berkley

Sectoral heterochromia is a condition where there are two different colours in one iris. My son has grey eyes but his right eye has a wedge of brown. Complete heterochromia is when one iris is a completely different colour than the other. Celebrities with this are Jane Seymour, Christopher Walken, Mila Kunis, Dan Ackroyd (again!), Keifer Sutherland, and Kate Bosworth.

Billy Corgan, port wine stain (birthmark) left arm and hand.

A port-wine stain or nevus flammeus is a vascular anomaly consisting of superficial and deep dilated capillaries in the skin which produce a reddish to purplish discoloration of the skin. They are so called for their colour, resembling that of port wine. Other well known people with this birthmark are Mikhail Gorbachev (forehead) and Tina Turner (right shoulder, back). These birthmarks are painless, do not interfere with any physical abilities and become more pronounced when the  person becomes hot and perspires. Like the rest of us, only more extreme. [wiki] Richard Gere also has a huge birthmark on his left shoulder. Although it is not a port wine stain, it is clearly viable in any scene where his bare back is showing.

David Bowie, one eye's pupil does not dilate

Bowie and his friend liked the same girl. According to Bowie he got the jump on his friend by asking her first. According to his friend, Bowie manipulated the situation so he would fail to get the girl. Either way, a fight ensued with Bowie taking a punch to the eye. His friend's fingernail clipped his eye causing damage. After four months of hospitalization and surgeries, Bowie was left with faulty depth perception and a permanently dilated pupil. The latter condition has misled some to believe that Bowie has different coloured eyes, when in reality both irises are the same blue colour. Despite their altercation, Underwood and Bowie remained good friends, and Underwood went on to create the artwork for Bowie's early albums. [wiki] Oh and look at this:

When did he get his teeth fixed? I missed that

Gary Burgoff has a deformed left hand

Burghoff's left hand is withered and misshapen with the fingers being very short—no cause is known for it, though it is presumed to be a birth defect known as a localized dysmelia. In M*A*S*H, he is often seen carrying a clipboard or other object to conceal the defect, though there are scenes where it can be seen very well, especially in the pilot episode of M*A*S*H*. [wiki]

Joaquin Phoenix

Consistent with his personality and what he expects us to swallow regarding his exalted self, Phoenix would have us believe that his lip is not a scar from a repaired cleft lip or palate but it is simply a birth mark. Phoenix has stated in interviews that, while pregnant with him, his mother felt a sharp pain one day, and he was born with a mark on his lip. Sure, sure. However on anyone else this would mark would indicate some sort of cleft palate condition which also occurs in varying degrees and this one is mostly likely a microderm cleft, one of the mildest forms. Yes, he developed it in the womb. Did his mother feel it happen? Anything is possible I guess.

Megan Fox, clubbed thumb

A clubbed thumb is brachydactyly of the thumb, a genetic trait characterized by one or both thumb nails being clubbed and the thumbs being fat and round. The condition is sometimes known as murderer's thumb, a name originally coined by gypsy fortune tellers or potter's thumb. More recently, it has been referred to as toe thumb for its resemblance to the big toe. [wiki]

Andy Garcia, conjoined twin

Andy Garcia was born with a conjoined twin the size of a softball attached to his shoulder. It was surgically removed, and Garcia has no memory of it.

Jennifer Garner, wonky toes. (like toes aren't all wonky)

Garner has brachymetatarsia, a condition in which one of the five long bones of the foot is shorter than the others, resulting in a shortened toe.

Daryl Hannah, missing finger tip

In her words: "When I was three years old I had an accident that still influences my attitude.’ Daryl holds up her left hand to reveal one finger is missing two joints. [I counted one missing joint, just saying] ‘I lost the top of my finger playing on my grandma’s mobility stair lift. It was terrifying, but could have been so much worse – and it has bestowed on me an ability to be a more compassionate person. [source]

Hrithik Roshan, Bollywood actor, has three thumbs.

We have someone who comes through drive-thru who has an extra finger. She even puts nail polish on the little fingernail. In India the supernumerary thumb which Hrithik has on his right hand is considered to be a lucky sign. Also born with scoliosis, he was told he would never be physically active. Clearly he doesn't care about what others think about what he can and can't do.

Catherine O'Hara, reversed organs

Situs inversus (also called situs transversus or oppositus) is a congenital condition in which the major visceral organs are reversed or mirrored from their normal positions. Also found in mirrored identical twins, this condition affects the person minimally unless there is also a congenital heart condition accompanying the condition.

Mickey Rourke, on this list because of his 'gnarly' finger disfigurement. Poor, poor Mickey. At least he has his good looks to fall back...wait...poor, poor Mickey.

Paul Stanley, ugly

Sorry there's no help for that. No really, he has wonky ears. Never noticed but he's deaf in one ear and that explains the music. Also deaf in one ear, Gerard Butler, Rob Lowe, Jane Lynch, Holly Hunter and Stephen Colbert. Demi Moore is blind in one eye.

George Takei, foot problems

He says he damaged his feet irreparably wearing shoes given to him by a fan. Did he not notice the pain while this was happening? Were they high heels? No, George claims many years ago he wore a pair of “lovely” running shoes, which he received from a fan, and that after wearing those shoes his feet cramped up. After the cramping and an operation George’s foot returned to normal only to be deformed once again a few years later. Worse, George’s other foot also turned sideways and was deformed. [source]

Yes. Elizabeth Taylor is on this list with a rare genetic mutation.
Her deformity is an extra row of eyelashes.

If ever there was a case for the humble brag*, this would be it. "I hate the genetic mutation I was born with! It gave me a double row of eyelashes!". In truth, her genetic mutation isn't always as cosmetically enhancing as Taylor’s turned out to be — the extra eyelashes can sometimes grow inward and damage the cornea. And it turns out that 7 percent of people with lymphedema-distichiasis syndrome also suffer from congenital heart disease. Plagued with serious issues her entire life, I'm sure she would have traded those lashes for good health. [source]
*Thanks Briezy!

Vince Vaughn, thumb
Lost the tip of his thumb in a car accident when he was 17

Matthew Perry, also lost part of a finger in an accident
Perry lost the top of his finger after being shut in a door as a kid.

Krusty the Klown also has a superfluous nipple.
A supernumerary nipple also known as a third nipple, triple nipple, accessory nipple, extraneous nipple, superfluous nipple, or polythelia is an additional nipple occurring in mammals, including humans. Often mistaken for moles, supernumerary nipples are diagnosed at a rate of 1 in 18 males and 1 in approximately 50 female humans. They are classified into eight levels of completeness from a simple patch of hair to a milk-bearing breast in miniature. Other celebrities with this condition are Lilly Allen, Meg Griffith, Krusty the Klown (what's with cartoons and three nipples?), Tony Parker (he has six nips in total), Tilda Swinton, and Carrie Underwood although she has had hers removed so she is unworthy of this list because this list...

...is celebrating the people who don't give a crap about being less than perfect. The article I read was here and their source was ebaum's world but there are all kinds of lists out there. I left off a lot of people who had similar injuries (wonky fingers from injuries) and those who don't really qualify and I added a couple extra people.

What I liked was regardless of the cause of their conditions everyone of the people pn this list carried on with their lives without crawling under a rock in embarrassment. And why should they be embarrassed? We are what we are and that's all that matters. Carry on.

[Note: because it's hard to tell when an image has been reversed when published, I may have right and left mixed up when describing where the condition may be found. My apologies for that]

I have a friend who has a triple nipple. She discovered it when she was lactating and it would leak breast milk. Ewwww...

OK, I was all: "it looks like a mole, so what?" but after reading that I can see why it's such a huge deal in the lists.

I have three nipples as well...
Also, there's a third form of heterochromia- central heterochromia. It's where the eye is one color, but there's a ring of a different color around the pupils. I have this- My eyes are green, but there's a goldish orangish ring around my pupil.

Natalie Wood had a deformity in one wrist. She wore specially made large bracelets in every movie to hide it.

Paul Stanley is not only deaf in one ear, he was born with microtia of the right ear. It was basically a small stump on his head, until the 1980s, when he had an ear surgically built from rib cartilage.
